Set on the campus of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, in the heart of downtown Birmingham, one of world music's most beloved singer-song writers, Angelique Kidjo and company brought their dynamic energy to the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center in Birmingham on last night, March 23, 2018. The Benin-born performer, infuses jazz, afro-funk, reggae, gospel, zouk, rumba, and salsa into her sound. Angelique’s loving, spirit filled rhythms, influenced her audience to join her on a musical journey, that included the singer paying homage to musical influences, Cela Cruz, Miram Makeba, and Nina Simone. She treated her audience to "Sea Lion woman", and "My baby cares just for me". She described first meeting Nina Simone. "Her playing was like an angel coming to earth" With a standing ovation at the end of the performance, Kidjo convinced her diverse audience to join her on stage for “Afrika”.
