About this image

“A NEW JAZZ PIANO RECORDING in 2004 needs to contain the inspiration of the latest innovative group of jazz piano virtuosi of the 1990s, led by Kenny Kirkland, Brad Mehldau and Jackie Terrasson, influenced by the great jazz pianists of the 1970s Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock and Joe Zawinul. Classical piano tone and technique is now a requirement regularly heard in performance of modern jazz piano music, along with the huge array of harmonic and rhythmic techniques of all music styles that have always been blended to make jazz music the most inspiring of modern art forms. Rodric White’s The Sea Of Tranquility is a collection of his many gifts as well as a reflection of the modern jazz piano techniques. His numerous musical ways display a powerful freedom combining his love and knowledge of the awesome jazz piano language, along with his singing voice, composition and arrangements. Rodric’s craft had been honed over years of playing with the best musicians around, and in this recording, he releases his wide array of emotions through his piano touch and voice, along with an exciting team of musicians. Listen to the range of Rodric’s piano playing from the powerful flowing style of The Rhythmatist, and Say What, to his broad ballad control & expression on To The Farthest Horizon, and Through The Years. Since the beginning of Rodric’s musical voyage, in the early 1980s, he has been profoundly influenced by the music of pianist Bill Evans. After hearing Bill Evans, Rodric soon developed his own way of re-harmonising jazz standards, a style of his own, now a real trademark of his individual style. On this recording, Rod re-harmonises I Believe In You, My Favourite Things and I Didn’t Know What Time It Was. The musicians for this project have been carefully chosen, the relaxed blend of the great Dale Barlow on tenor saxophone and flute, with the trumpet of Phil Slater and the very special mature sound of vocalist Debra Dicembre that combines well with Rodric’s voice also. The other featured members of the team are Jason Morphett (soprano sax), Roberto Balfas (percussion) and Richard Bornman (classical guitar). KEVIN HUNT Australian Pianist & Composer

All About Jazz needs your support

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
